Life After Death

Details and Artist’s Notes

  • Baptism Process:

    • Water

      • Scorpio is a Water sign and, energetically, Water represents the past, emotion, collective memory, the womb, the unknown, and the psychic

      • This pool of water is the catalyst for the renewal of souls

    • Baptism

      • The pastor is helping a reluctant soul through the process. He does not force the poor soul, only guiding, as everyone must do this

    • The Boat

      • Aboard the dugout canoe are souls who have accepted their fate; they await their rebirth

  • Ori Inu:

    • The mountain-like figure covered in cowry shells represents the Ori-inu or the “inner-head” in Yoruba culture. This is a spirit that lives within, one that you keep with you in your life

  • Scorpion Statues:

    • The scorpion is the mascot for Scorpio, representing protection, cunning, and transformation

  • Scorpio, herself:

    • She faces the process and may, in fact, be leading it. You cannot see her face; is she beautiful? Frightening? It’s not for us to know

    • Her dress indicates wealth, even royalty (heavy fabrics and the fleur-de-lis pattern), implying not only her control over the mystical process before her, but also a demand of her material circumstances, as well
